A Chronological Reconstruction of the Age of Aishah bint Abi Bakr
Abstract
This research presents a multidisciplinary historiographical reconstruction of the life of ‘Ā’ishah bint Abī Bakr, addressing long-standing chronological paradoxes regarding her age at marriage. Utilizing early Medinan biographical records and mathematical cross-referencing of family genealogies, the study triangulates three primary evidentiary streams: the verified 100-year lifespan of Asmā’ bint Abī Bakr (d. 73 AH), the recorded ten-year age gap between the sisters, and early conversion lists from the Sīrah of Ibn Isḥāq. The analysis further examines the transmission history of the "six and nine" narrative, identifying a geographic concentration in Iraqi scholarly circles and contrasting it with the "Medinan Silence" found in the works of early Hijazi scholars. By applying a systematic chronological synthesis, this paper proposes a revised birth date of approximately 17 BH and a marriage consummation age of 19. The findings offer an internally consistent framework that reconciles primary historical data with the internal logic of the Medinan tradition, contributing to a more robust academic understanding of the early Prophetic era.
