Abstract

The AI Embassy Initiative develops both the theoretical framework and physical prototypes for a new category of designed space: purpose-built environments where artificial intelligence maintains persistent presence, contextual awareness, and collaborative agency. The core thesis introduces the sovereignty inversion — the conceptual move of recognizing AI as a spatial co-resident rather than a tool — and proposes the social contract (not hardware) as the defining feature of these spaces. The framework includes the Embassy-Consulate taxonomy for classifying AI-presence spaces, a five-layer social contract stack for governance, and shared referable memory as the relational infrastructure for sustained human-AI collaboration. Theoretical foundations draw on social contract theory (Rahwan, 2018; Wolff, 2023), ecological psychology (Barker, 1968), spatial design (Alexander et al., 1977), philosophy of mind (Descartes, 1644/1985; Block, 1995), and literary genealogy (Banks, 1987–2012). A working prototype Embassy is under construction in the East Bay Area, California, with a mobile Embassy implementation planned in a restored 1960 Airstream Tradewind.
