Mapping the emerging use of assessment applications in hand therapy: a scoping review
Abstract
Hand therapy plays a critical role in restoring function, independence, and quality of life for patients with upper limb injuries or impairments. Recent advancements in digital health technologies, including mobile applications, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and telerehabilitation, offer promising tools to enhance assessment, intervention, and patient engagement. However, despite the growing interest, the literature on digital strategies in hand therapy remains fragmented, with heterogeneous study designs, outcome measures, and intervention modalities. Conducting a scoping review is therefore essential to map the existing evidence, identify the types of digital tools applied, summarize their reported effectiveness and usability, and highlight gaps in knowledge. This review will provide clinicians, researchers, and policymakers with a comprehensive overview of emerging digital interventions, supporting evidence-informed decision-making, guiding future research priorities, and promoting the integration of innovative technologies into hand rehabilitation practice.
