ACC Framework V2
Abstract
The Energy–Control–Time (ECT) Framework addresses a fundamental challenge in scientific explanation: How do we rigorously evaluate whether proposed mechanisms can produce observed outcomes within realistic constraints? Traditional approaches often rely on qualitative judgments ("unlikely," "implausible," "difficult to explain"). The ECT Framework provides quantitative, falsifiable analysis by decomposing any time dependent process into two independent factors: Energy (E): Usable work capacity available to the process Control (C): Effectiveness in directing energy toward the target outcome The core relationship T = k/(E × C) establishes quantitative bounds on feasibility and enables researchers to: 1. Calculate minimum control requirements for any proposed mechanism 2. Compare known mechanisms against these requirements 3. Quantify deficits or surpluses with explicit uncertainty ranges 4. Generate falsifiable predictions about what evidence should exist 5. Identify where missing mechanisms or reconsideration of assumptions is needed The framework is mechanism-agnostic: it does not assert which mechanisms operate, but quantifies what any successful mechanism must accomplish. Companion Framework The Algorithmic Control Characterization (ACC) Framework (published separately on OSF) complements ECT by translating abstract control values into concrete, measurable properties. Together they provide: ECT: Calculates C_required and identifies deficits ACC: Characterizes what those control values mean in algorithmic and information-theoretic terms Combined: Complete toolkit for mechanism evaluation Key Contributions 1. Quantitative Rigor: Transforms qualitative debates into numerical analysis with explicit bounds 2. Falsifiability: Generates testable predictions and identifies what evidence would change conclusions 3. Generality: Applicable across scientific domains without domain-specific assumptions 4. Practical Utility: Provides clear methodology for feasibility analysis 5. Intellectual Honesty: Separates what we know from what we need to explain 6. Framework Integration: Works seamlessly with ACC Framework for comprehensive analysis Applications Demonstrated This framework has been applied to analyze: Protein folding dynamics (explaining ~10⁴¹ control factors) Origin of life sequence-space scenarios (identifying ~10¹⁸⁵'¹⁴⁷ control deficits) Manufacturing process optimization And provides methodology for countless other applications
