The effects of hydrogen-rich water on exercise performance in healthy adults: A three-arm randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
Abstract
This study investigates potential changes in exercise performance, as well as exercise recovery, energy, and cognition-related metrics upon chronic consumption of hydrogen-rich water. The primary study purpose is to understand whether hydrogen water contributes to ameliorating any of the above health dimensions in the general, healthy population aged 35-55. Over the course of the study period, participants will be required to consume three 354 mL bottles of hydrogen water or placebo water per day. They will be invited to attend four in-person visits to conduct standardized performance and cognitive and testing, complete validated questionnaires, and perform blood tests and stool sample collection pre and post intervention. During the week of each study visit, participants will further be required to wear an FDA-approved diagnostic ring from Sleep Image™ every night to allow for continuous monitoring of their sleep. At these timepoints, participants will also complete additional online check-in surveys, mood questionnaires, and track their diet over seven consecutive days using the Alma Nutrition™ smartphone app. Lastly, participants will receive daily text message reminders to ensure compliance with all study procedures. It is expected that the results from this clinical study will improve our understanding of the potential benefits of hydrogen water on several aspects of exercise performance and human health, including energy, cognition, and exercise recovery.
