Abstract

We are conducting this review to update and clarify what is currently known about participatory research (PR) in autism. This review is needed because participatory research in autism is growing but still inconsistent in how it is described, implemented, and reported. Previous reviews were limited in scope. Some included other disabilities, did not differentiate autistic from non-autistic partners, or focused on only one method (e.g., photovoice, digital technology). The field lacks a current, comprehensive understanding of how PR is being used in autism research and the extent of meaningful participation. By updating the literature and clearly distinguishing autistic and non-autistic co-researchers, this review fills an important knowledge gap. It provides clearer information about who participates, how partnerships function, and what benefits and challenges exist. This can guide future researchers toward more ethical, transparent, and inclusive participatory practices.
