Abstract

The present study identified important associations between sociodemographic factors, clinical history and the presence of mental health problems in students and teachers of a public university in the Andean region. The findings highlight that adolescent students (under 20 years of age) have a greater prevalence of depression, anxiety and perceived stress than young adults do. Similarly, it was observed that being a woman was significantly associated with anxiety and perceived stress problems in this population and that personal and family history of mental health are relevant factors for the presence of these conditions. The results are consistent with those reported in most previous studies and emphasize the need to address mental health, considering sociodemographic and clinical factors and the cultural, geographic and socioeconomic particularities of each context.
