Effect of probe order on consonant-list judgements of spacing
Abstract
This experiment will closely follow a previous pre-registered experiment (https://osf.io/3rcy8) where the authors investigated the effects of item similarity on the judgements of spacing (JOS) task. Participants were presented sequentially with a list of 7 consonants then presented with two random letters from the list and asked to judge the spacing (i.e., how many letters came between). In that experiment, we restricted the order in which the probe was presented such that the earlier probe item in the list was presented on the left side of the screen, and the later probe item on the right. We call these "intact" probes, since the order is preserved in the probe pair. In this new pre-registered experiment, we will change only one thing, and that is to randomize the order in which the probe is presented. This way, on average, half of all probe pairs will be intact, but the other half will be "reversed" (the earlier probe item will be presented on the right of the screen, and the later item on the left). In short, we want to investigate how probe order effects performance on the task, if it does at all.
