Abstract

Sedentary behavior is increasingly common worldwide and is a risk factor for several chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. We are interested in identifying environmental correlates of sedentary behavior encompassing weather conditions, climate, and experienced ambient temperature. These environmental correlates of sedentary behavior have not been widely studied in adults and across global populations with varying weather and climatic conditions. It is critical to identify the environmental factors that are associated with sedentariness in order to better understand behavior and potential ways to reduce sedentary behavior. We are carrying out this scoping review to synthesize the research that has studied environmental correlates of sedentary behavior, which will centralize knowledge and inform research going forward. We expect weather, climate, and experienced ambient temperature to influence time spent in sedentary behavior. We also expect varying amounts of average sedentary behavior across factors such as latitude, seasons, and age.
