Care for people with Young Onset Dementia (YOD) in care homes: a scoping review of the needs, perspectives and experiences of people with YOD, informal carers and staff
Abstract
While dementia is commonly associated with older age, there are an estimated 70,800 people in the United Kingdom (UK) with Young Onset Dementia (YOD) (Carter, 2022) (symptom onset before the age of 65 (van de Veen et al. 2021)). Care provision for people with YOD in care homes is an area of growing research interest, yet no literature reviews on this topic have been published. There is a need for a comprehensive overview of the academic and grey literature so that researchers can identify gaps in evidence and practice and inform future research. This scoping review aims to synthesise the academic and grey literature on the views and experiences of people with YOD, carers and care home staff regarding care provided in care homes for people with YOD.
