Neural representational patterns underlying semantic completion in temporal episodic memory
Abstract
Previous behavioral studies of semantic completion in episodic memory have shown that semantic memory–based expectations influence episodic retrieval in both spatial and temporal domains. In the temporal domain (e.g., recalling the precise order of sequential events), this effect depends on the encoding of semantically structured material. Prior neuroimaging work indicates that both semantic and event-specific episodic representations emerge during encoding and retrieval, and that the presence and quality of each can predict behavior. The present study will use univariate and multivariate analyses of fMRI data collected during a temporal order memory task to examine how semantic and episodic representations of task-relevant content during encoding and retrieval relate to behavioral patterns of semantic completion in temporal episodic memory.
