FROM PASSIVE DISSIPATION TO ACTIVE VIABILITY
Abstract
Order-Window Dynamics: From Passive Dissipation to Active Viability Order-Window Dynamics (OWD) is a carrier-based framework for analysing viability, transition, persistence, and failure in open dissipative systems. It operates downstream of established domain-specific models and thermodynamic constraints. OWD does not replace governing equations, modify the laws of thermodynamics, or introduce a universal measure of order. The framework represents system viability through independently defined functional margins, bounded operating windows, directed coupling pathways, accessible sink capacities, state compatibility, disruptive loading, and explicit temporal conditions. A system remains viable only while all declared necessary functions remain within their admissible ranges. The Active Viability extension distinguishes three sources of functional support: externally supplied support, stored or preassembled capacity, and support generated or regenerated within the declared system boundary. This distinction separates temporary externally sustained function from endogenous maintenance of the conditions required for continuation. Endogenous coupling closure is defined as a directed internal return path that causally, functionally, and temporally contributes to maintaining or reconstructing a condition necessary for its own continued operation. Structural feedback alone is insufficient. The framework requires forward prediction, inverse reconstruction, comparison with simpler carrier-consistent models, independently operationalised variables, frozen thresholds, and explicit no-rescue rules. It is rejected if endogenous support cannot be distinguished from external or stored support, if predicted limiting functions are not observed, or if simpler models provide equivalent explanatory or predictive performance. The current work establishes a formal and falsifiable research architecture. It does not claim experimental confirmation, a complete theory of life, or a universal definition of biological viability.
