Tidal Deformability Constraints on a Quadratic Scalar Energy-Density Extension of Neutron Star Structure
Abstract
This paper investigates observational constraints on a minimal quadratic scalar energy-density extension to neutron star structure using gravitational-wave tidal deformability measurements. By introducing a phenomenological correction proportional to \beta \rho^2 into the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff equations, we compute the resulting tidal Love number and dimensionless tidal deformability. Using Fisher matrix estimation at signal-to-noise ratio 32, we derive an upper bound of order \beta \lesssim \mathcal{O}(10^{-5}). The results demonstrate that current gravitational-wave observations can meaningfully constrain phenomenological scalar extensions in the strong-field regime.
