Abstract

Description: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a condition that affects millions of people and compromises not only renal function but also the physical, mental, and social dimensions of patients’ lives, making health-related quality of life (HRQoL) a fundamental indicator for assessing the impact of the disease (Sahu et al., 2025). In advanced stages, the demands of dialysis, dietary restrictions, and limitations imposed by treatment contribute to a reduction in overall well-being (Sahu et al., 2025). During childhood and adolescence, this impact is even more significant, as it occurs in a phase of intense development. Children and adolescents with CKD, especially those undergoing Kidney Replacement Therapy, face clinical complications and restrictions that interfere with daily activities, leisure, and school performance, negatively affecting their quality of life (Anjos et al., 2024). Objective: This scoping review aims to map the evidence related to the presence or absence of interaction between CKD and quality of life through the self-report of children and adolescents. Inclusion Criteria: This project will include studies addressing self-perceived quality of life related to CKD in children and adolescents, published between 2015 and 2025; the age range of the population of interest will be up to 18 years; condition: children with chronic kidney disease; languages: any language; types of study: original articles with qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, or interventional approaches. Methodology: The study will include the following databases: BVS, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE. Regarding the combination of descriptors, in BVS: ("Insuficiência Renal Crônica" OR "Renal Insufficiency, Chronic" OR "Insuficiencia Renal Crónica" OR "Insuffisance rénale chronique" OR "Doença Renal Crônica" OR "Doença do Rim Crônica" OR "Chronic Kidney Disease" OR "Chronic Kidney Insufficiency" OR "Chronic Renal Disease") AND (criança OR child OR niño OR enfant OR adolescente OR adolescent OR children OR teen OR teenager) AND ("Qualidade de Vida" OR "Quality of Life" OR "Calidad de Vida" OR "Qualité de vie" OR "Life Quality") AND db:("LILACS" OR "BDENF" OR "IBECS" OR "WPRIM" OR "BINACIS" OR "CUMED" OR "INDEXPSI" OR "BBO" OR "BRISA" OR "LIPECS" OR "colecionaSUS" OR "AIM" OR "BIGG" OR "SES-SP" OR "SMS-SP" OR "campusvirtualsp_brasil") AND instance:"regional". In Medline via PubMed: ("Renal Insufficiency, Chronic" OR "Chronic Kidney Disease" OR "Chronic Kidney Insufficiency" OR "Chronic Renal Disease") AND (Child OR Adolescent OR Children OR Teen OR Teenager) AND ("Quality of Life" OR "Life Quality"); In Scopus: ("Renal Insufficiency, Chronic" OR "Chronic Kidney Disease" OR "Chronic Kidney Insufficiency" OR "Chronic Renal Disease") AND (Child OR Adolescent OR Children OR Teen OR Teenager) AND ("Quality of Life" OR "Life Quality"); In Web of Science: ("Renal Insufficiency, Chronic" OR "Chronic Kidney Disease" OR "Chronic Kidney Insufficiency" OR "Chronic Renal Disease") AND (Child OR Adolescent OR Children OR Teen OR Teenager) AND ("Quality of Life" OR "Life Quality"); In Embase: ("Renal Insufficiency, Chronic" OR "Chronic Kidney Disease" OR "Chronic Kidney Insufficiency" OR "Chronic Renal Disease") AND (Child OR Adolescent OR Children OR Teen OR Teenager) AND ("Quality of Life" OR "Life Quality"). The following strategy will be adopted: two independent reviewers will screen the titles and abstracts of the identified studies. Subsequently, the selected articles will have their full texts imported and assessed using reference management software. Any disagreements between reviewers will be resolved through the evaluation of a third reviewer. A preliminary data extraction table will be developed based on the standardized JBI form, including: Author(s), Year of publication, Origin/country of origin, Objectives, Population, Methodology, Type of intervention, Outcomes and their details, and Main findings related to the scoping review question(s) (Peters et al., 2020). The findings will be organized in table format and accompanied by a descriptive summary of the main results.
