Abstract

The study investigates bilingual word learning under ambiguity in 4-7 year-old children. Children are presented with novel objects that are labelled with either English-like or Spanish-like pseudowords across 20 training trials, simulating a bilingual environment. Children are explicitly told to learn the labels for all objects, and that some objects will have English labels and some objects will have Spanish labels. At test, children are asked to select the toy that corresponds to the label they hear over 8 test trials. The objective of the study is to investigate if children can learn labels in both languages, and whether there are age effects or effects of language background on learning.
