Hospital Command Center: Organizational Structures, Processes and Indicators – A Scoping Review
Abstract
This project consists of a scoping review aimed at examining the existing literature on Hospital Command Centers and related centralized hospital coordination structures. The review seeks to identify and describe how Hospital Command Centers are organized and operationalized within hospital systems. It will characterize their governance models, team composition, operational processes (such as bed management, patient flow coordination, and capacity management), and the performance indicators reported in the literature. Eligible studies include quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and descriptive research, as well as institutional reports with explicit methodological descriptions. Only studies published within the last five years will be considered, in order to capture the most recent organizational models and digital transformation practices in hospital operational coordination. Publications must be available in English or Portuguese and with full-text access. Studies related to military command centers, disaster-only coordination centers without permanent hospital integration, public safety control centers, or purely IT infrastructures without organizational context will be excluded. This review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews and will be reported in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The findings are expected to provide a contemporary overview of organizational structures and operational models of Hospital Command Centers and to identify current knowledge gaps in the literature.
