Model-Induced Coherence Pressure
Abstract
This registration documents Model-Induced Coherence Pressure, a structural analysis of how generative systems produce and stabilize coherence in excess of underlying semantic conditions. The work introduces coherence pressure as a relational condition describing how sustained algorithmic coherence reshapes meaning-bearing environments, rather than as an error mode, performance defect, or alignment failure. The analysis reframes coherence and alignment as structurally productive forces rather than neutral indicators of quality. As coherent outputs accumulate and persist, semantic environments adapt to generated stability, compressing interpretive variance and accelerating closure. Meaning becomes easier to reproduce and increasingly difficult to reopen or revise. Coherence pressure is thus treated as an environmental effect rather than a property of individual outputs. This project distinguishes coherence pressure from bias, hallucination, misalignment, or optimization failure. The condition is defined as content-independent and can arise under conditions of high accuracy, procedural correctness, and institutional approval. Coherence pressure explains how systems may appear aligned, consistent, and mature while becoming less capable of sustaining unresolved distinctions or interpretive plurality. The registration situates model-induced coherence pressure as a foundational mechanism within the broader structural ecology articulated in related work. Sustained coherence pressure is shown to accelerate premature stabilization, contribute to irreversibility, and enable proxy substitution, as model outputs increasingly function as stand-ins for expertise, synthesis, consensus, or judgment. Particular attention is given to AI-mediated environments, where probabilistic smoothing, representational persistence, and repeated exposure mechanize and scale coherence production. In such systems, coherence is not merely reflected but actively enforced, shifting interpretive dynamics from human deliberation to structural constraint. The analysis is intentionally non-prescriptive. No mitigation strategies, governance frameworks, evaluation metrics, or design recommendations are proposed. Coherence pressure is presented as a condition to be recognized rather than a parameter to be optimized or managed. The purpose of this registration is conceptual and structural: to clarify how coherence functions as a force and why stability is frequently misinterpreted as resolution. This description reflects an open-ended theoretical articulation rather than a finalized framework. The concepts documented here establish model-induced coherence pressure as a structural condition shaping semantic environments under large-scale generative mediation within the Meta-Writing Ecology.
