Evaluating the effectiveness of digital literacy curriculum: An RCT in Catalan high schools
Abstract
We will conduct a randomized trial to examine the effectiveness of a 15-hour high school digital literacy curriculum. The curriculum, which focuses on lateral reading and source credibility, was developed by Verificat, a fact-checking outlet based in Barcelona with whom we are partnering. We will randomize some classes to receive the training, allowing us to estimate treatment effects on fake news discernment, attitudes towards misinformation, and downstream attitudes related to political engagement and media consumption. We will estimate effects immediately post-treatment and after a 3-4 week delay. We will also explore heterogeneity based on class- and student-level factors measured in a pre-treatment survey.
