The Integrated Model of Flow and Clutch States: A Scoping Review Protocol
Abstract
The Integrated Model of Flow and Clutch States has been extended, adapted, applied, and refined across performance contexts such as sport, exercise, and physical activity to enhance understanding of the psychological states underlying excellent performance. However, no review has systematically synthesized this literature or examined how different versions of the model have been articulated across these performance contexts. Therefore, this scoping review aims to synthesize existing knowledge of the Integrated Model, clarify its core components, and identify inconsistencies and gaps in the literature to inform a consolidated and refined version of the model that enhances its conceptual clarity and applied utility for both research and practice. More specific objectives of this scoping review will examine: (i) how the Integrated Model has been conceptualized, adapted, refined, or extended across sport, exercise, physical activity, and performance psychology research; (ii) the types of evidence published using the Integrated Model, including study designs, populations, and applied contexts; (iii) how the contexts, processes of occurrence, characteristics, and outcomes within the Integrated Model are articulated across the literature, including inconsistencies and gaps in the current evidence base; and (iv) how existing evidence can be synthesized to inform an updated and consolidated version of the Integrated Model, enhancing its conceptual clarity and applied utility.
