Abstract

Functional Reading Activities to Motivate and Empower (FRAME) is a reading comprehension intervention designed for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Grounded in the idea that comprehension can be taught using practical, real-life texts, FRAME helps participants learn and independently apply explicit reading strategies before, during, and after reading through structured lessons that include visual supports, modeling, and guided practice. Using functional materials such as emails, text messages, and invitations, FRAME connects reading to meaningful daily activities, builds confidence, and uses clear routines and repetition to support skill retention and generalization across life domains.
