Protocol Scoping Review - AI problematic use
Abstract
This project is a scoping review that maps the emerging peer-reviewed literature on problematic use of conversational AI/chatbots (including LLM-based assistants and companion agents) to clarify how the construct is currently defined, operationalized, and studied. Using PRISMA-ScR guidance and established scoping-review methodology, we will synthesize evidence from Scopus and Web of Science (covering 2021–2025) to document the range of conceptualizations (e.g., addiction-like engagement, compulsive/excessive use, impaired control, overreliance, reduced autonomy), the measurement approaches used (scales, items, behavioral indicators), and the antecedents and consequences examined (psychological, motivational, social, contextual, and technological factors; outcomes such as well-being, functioning, cognition, and social impacts). Expected outcomes include an evidence map and taxonomy of definitions, an inventory of instruments and methodological practices, identification of key research gaps, and openly shared materials (charting forms, coding rules, and extracted dataset) on OSF to support transparency and future theory and measurement development.
