Interactive web application for visualizing quality assessments using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS)
Abstract
This project presents an interactive web-based Shiny application designed to facilitate the visualization of study quality assessments using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS). The application provides a user-friendly and reproducible approach for summarizing and graphically presenting NOS assessments commonly used in systematic reviews and meta-analyses of observational studies. The app allows users to upload their own NOS datasets (CSV or Excel format) or work with a built-in demo dataset to explore the functionality. Each study is visualized across the standard NOS domains, enabling clear comparison of methodological quality between studies. The final output is a publication-ready graphical summary that can be exported for inclusion in manuscripts, supplementary materials, or presentations. Key features of the application include: Uploading custom NOS assessment datasets Access to and download of a demo dataset for testing and demonstration Interactive generation of NOS quality plots Adjustable plot dimensions (width and height) to meet journal requirements Download of high-resolution figures suitable for publication This tool aims to improve transparency, consistency, and reproducibility in reporting quality assessments of non-randomized studies. It is particularly useful for researchers conducting systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or methodological research who require standardized visual reporting of NOS evaluations. The application is developed using R and Shiny and is freely accessible online, supporting open science practices and reproducible research.
