Abstract

This study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) examining the use of Artificial Intelligence Writing (AIW) tools in higher education. The primary objective of the review is to synthesize existing empirical and conceptual research on the opportunities, challenges, ethical considerations, and implications of AIW tools for sustainable academic practices in teaching, learning, and research. The review follows established systematic review guidelines, including the PRISMA 2020 framework, to ensure transparency, rigor, and reproducibility. A comprehensive search strategy will be implemented across multiple academic databases, including Scopus and Web of Science, using predefined keywords related to artificial intelligence, writing tools, higher education, academic integrity, sustainability, and pedagogical innovation. Inclusion and exclusion criteria are clearly defined to focus on peer-reviewed journal articles published in English within a specified time frame. Data extraction will be conducted systematically to capture key study characteristics, methodological approaches, educational contexts, types of AIW tools examined, and reported outcomes. The included studies will be analyzed using thematic synthesis to identify recurring patterns, benefits, risks, and gaps in the literature. The expected outcomes of this review include: A structured overview of how AIW tools are currently applied in higher education settings; Identification of pedagogical, ethical, and institutional challenges associated with AIW adoption; An evidence-based discussion of how AIW tools may support or hinder sustainable academic practices; Recommendations for educators, policymakers, and researchers regarding responsible and effective integration of AIW tools in higher education. By consolidating fragmented research findings, this systematic review aims to contribute to the growing scholarly discourse on artificial intelligence in education and to provide a reliable evidence base for future research, policy development, and instructional design.
