Nurse competencies for the care of burn patients with sepsis: Scope review protocol
Abstract
protocol Introduction Burns represent complex and challenging conditions in healthcare. Considering the susceptibility of burn patients to infection, the prevalence of sepsis is high in burn patients, which results in high mortality rates, long periods of hospitalization, and high costs for healthcare services. In this context, the importance of qualified and evidence-based care practices stands out, since early detection, clinical management, and the application of sepsis protocols guide all clinical decision-making and reasoning for a better prognosis for these patients. Despite the relevance of the topic, there is a gap in the literature regarding the competencies of nurses in the care of burn patients with sepsis. Thus, this protocol aims to map the competencies of nurses in the care of burn patients diagnosed with sepsis. It is hoped that this study will contribute to training processes, strengthen care protocols, identify operational weaknesses, and support evidence-based clinical decision-making by nurses. Method A scope review will be conducted based on the method proposed by the JBI, using the extension for Scope Reviews of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA-ScR). The databases used for the search will be Medline, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, Lilacs, and Embase. Screening will also be performed to select studies from the gray literature, including scientific nursing journals, national and international burn societies, CAPES thesis and dissertation database, surviving sepsis guidelines, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Latin American Institute of Sepsis (ILAS), World Health Organization (WHO), and Cochrane Library. The selected descriptors will be applied in the repositories for data collection. The protocol will be developed according to the PCC structure: Patient/Participant (P) - burn patients with sepsis; Concept (C) - nursing skills and practices; Context (C) - care in treatment centers for burn patients and will consider studies that address nursing skills for burn patients with sepsis. The review will consider all studies published from 2017, the year in which the concept of sepsis was updated, to the present. The selection of studies, data extraction, and data synthesis will be performed by two independent reviewers. The results will be presented in narrative format and with tables or diagrams. Keywords Role of the Nursing Professional, Clinical Competence, Burns, Sepsis, Evidence-Based Nursing. Ethical aspects The scope review is a secondary source study, with the purpose of mapping the evidence found on a given topic. Thus, according to Resolution No. 510/2016, in its Article 1, sole paragraph, item VI, it states that “research conducted exclusively with scientific texts for the review of scientific literature will not be registered or evaluated by the CEP/CONEP System.
