Bioethanol production from microalgae: technological routes, challenges, and industrial prospects - A Scoping Review.
Abstract
This study consists of a scoping review that aims to map and synthesize scientific evidence on the technological routes used in the production of bioethanol from microalgal biomass, focusing on pretreatment strategies, carbohydrate hydrolysis, fermentation processes, and integration into biorefineries. The review will seek to identify the technological performance, operational challenges, technical and economic feasibility, and prospects for industrial scaling of these processes, in addition to pointing out research gaps and opportunities for advancing the circular bioeconomy. The selection of studies will be carried out systematically in international databases, following previously defined eligibility criteria, with extraction and descriptive analysis of data related to biomass characteristics, process configuration, yield indicators, sustainability, and potential for industrial-scale application.
