“Sensory reweighting–based interventions for balance, and postural control in post stroke individuals: a scoping review”
Abstract
Balance, gait, and postural control rely on the effective integration of visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive sensory inputs. Disruptions in this multisensory integration are common in individuals undergoing rehabilitation and can negatively affect functional mobility and fall risk. Sensory reweighting refers to the nervous system’s ability to dynamically adjust the relative contribution of sensory inputs in response to changes in environmental or task demands. Rehabilitation interventions that deliberately manipulate sensory inputs aim to enhance this adaptive process and improve balance and locomotor performance. The objective of this scoping review is to map and synthesize the existing evidence on sensory reweighting–based interventions used in rehabilitation and physiotherapy to improve balance, gait, and postural control. Sensory reweighting–based interventions are defined as therapeutic approaches that intentionally alter, challenge, or manipulate visual, vestibular, and/or proprioceptive inputs to promote adaptive sensorimotor integration. A comprehensive literature search will be conducted in PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and CINAHL, including studies published in English between 2000 and 2026. Search terms will cover concepts related to sensory reweighting and multisensory integration combined with rehabilitation- and mobility-related terms such as balance, postural control, and gait. Eligible studies will include intervention-based designs (e.g., randomized controlled trials, non-randomized trials, quasi-experimental studies, experimental studies, and pilot or feasibility studies) involving participants undergoing rehabilitation or physiotherapy. Studies must include deliberate manipulation of sensory inputs and report at least one outcome related to balance, postural control, or gait. Studies conducted exclusively in healthy participants, observational or assessment-only studies, case reports, and review articles will be excluded. This scoping review will provide an overview of sensory reweighting–based rehabilitation interventions, summarize key intervention characteristics and outcomes, and identify gaps to guide future research and clinical practice.
