Abstract

Computational chemistry calculation methods encompass a wide range of approaches with different levels of accuracy and computational cost, including Molecular Mechanics (MM), semi-empirical methods, ab initio methods, and Density Functional Theory (DFT). Molecular Mechanics is highly efficient for very large systems such as proteins and materials, but its neglect of electronic effects limits its applicability for studying chemical reactions. Semi-empirical methods provide a compromise between efficiency and the explicit treatment of electrons; however, their accuracy strongly depends on the quality of empirical parameterization. Ab initio methods offer high accuracy based strictly on fundamental quantum mechanical principles, yet they are computationally demanding and generally restricted to small to medium-sized systems. Density Functional Theory has become one of the most widely used methods due to its favorable balance between accuracy and computational efficiency, although its reliability is sensitive to the choice of exchange–correlation functional. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate computational method must be carefully aligned with the research objectives, system size, and required level of accuracy to obtain meaningful and reliable results.
