Non-surgical and non-pharmacological interventions for childhood-onset hyperkinetic movement disorders including dystonia: A scoping review, critical appraisal, and intervention mapping protocol.
Abstract
Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders (HMD) are disorders that cause uncontrolled movements, including dystonia. These conditions can have a significant impact on individuals’ lives and participation in daily activities. There is limited research in this area and a serious lack of standardisation of outcome measures used. A recent scoping review aiming to address this gap identified 294 articles of which over 80% consisted of studies of surgical or pharmacological interventions, highlighting the limited evidence on non-surgical and non-pharmacological intervention options for this population Aim: The aim of this scoping review is to identify and critically appraise the quality of the evidence for non-surgical and non-pharmacological interventions reported in the published evidence for childhood-onset hyperkinetic movement disorders, including dystonia, and map them to the ICF framework. Methods: This systematic scoping review is guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses extension for scoping review (PRISMA-ScR). Articles identified in the previous review (2001-Feb 2025) will be included and Medline, CINAHL plus, and EMBASE will be searched to identify literature published since the original search (Nov 2025). Titles and abstracts will be checked by two independent reviewers and data will be extracted and mapped to the ICF framework.
