Abstract

This qualitative study is the first phase of a mixed methods study exploring the cultural consensus on love in everyday life in Brazil. The purpose of this phase is to identify culturally grounded, everyday life scenarios in which people in Brazil feel loved, as well as to explore how these experiences vary by relational tie (e.g., family, friend, romantic partner, stranger). Using a contemporary iterative approach to thematic analysis, we combine deductive coding based on expert-identified scenarios with inductive coding for emergent themes. Coders will also categorize the relational tie for each scenario. Intercoder agreement will be assessed through percent agreement at multiple time points. The resulting scenarios and themes will inform the development of culturally valid items for the Felt Love Questionnaire, which will be used to assess cultural consensus in a subsequent quantitative phase.
