Abstract

In certain cases, ambiguous relative clauses are processed faster than non-ambiguous ones. In addition, previous research has shown that French speakers exhibit a preference for high attachment when relative clauses are longer. We hypothesized that these two effects could combine and provide French speakers with an added facility for rapidly processing longer ambiguous relative clauses. We will test this hypothesis by running a self-paced reading experiment with native or dominant French participants.
