Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly being integrated into healthcare documentation workflows, including AI-assisted scribes, ambient listening systems, and natural language processing tools designed to generate or support clinical notes. While these technologies have been studied primarily in physician populations, nurses are responsible for a substantial proportion of clinical documentation and may experience unique benefits, challenges, and implications from AI-assisted documentation tools. However, the extent, nature, and outcomes of AI use for nursing documentation have not yet been comprehensively mapped. This scoping review aims to systematically identify and map the existing literature on nurses’ use of AI technologies for clinical documentation. Specifically, the review will examine the types of AI documentation tools used, clinical settings and contexts of implementation, nurse populations involved, and reported outcomes, including documentation efficiency, accuracy, workflow impact, user perceptions, and patient safety considerations. The review will also identify barriers and facilitators to implementation, ethical and legal considerations, and gaps in the current evidence base. The review will follow established methodological guidance for scoping reviews and use a comprehensive search strategy across multiple bibliographic databases and grey literature sources. Findings will be synthesized narratively and presented in tabular and visual formats to provide an overview of the current state of evidence. This work will help inform future research, clinical implementation, education, and policy related to the use of AI documentation tools in nursing practice, and will support the responsible integration of emerging technologies into healthcare workflows.
