Inside the ADHD Brain: A Biopsychological Case Study of a 14–Year–Old
Abstract
This report examines the function of the prefrontal cortex in planning, attention, and the control of impulses; the basal ganglia in motor control and inhibition; the cerebellum in coordination and attentional processes; and the limbic system areas, amygdala and hippocampus in emotional control. Alongside the brain network, the deconstruction considers wider science, including the role of neurotransmitter systems dopamine and genetic and developmental processes that influence this state. By bridging existing theory to current research – and bringing it all back to Shakeel’s case, this essay demonstrates how biological psychology describes ADHD in real-world, practical terms. It also conveys how this realisation will likely lead to greater thoughtful and helpful assistance for youths like him.
