Building Psychological Safety in Virtual Teams: A Design Science Research Study Integrating Multidimensional Distancing, Job Demands-Resources, and Soft Systems Approaches
Abstract
This research employs Design Science Research (DSR) to develop, implement, and validate an integrated framework for promoting psychological safety in virtual teams by addressing the complex interplay between multidimensional distancing (psychological, temporal, technological, and structural), work resources (social interactions and organizational support), and psychological safety outcomes. Primary Research Questions RQ1: How do the four dimensions of multidimensional distancing interact to create barriers to psychological safety in virtual teams? RQ2: What is the relationship between social interactions, organizational support, and psychological safety in remote work contexts? RQ3: What are the key intervention strategies and resources that organizations can leverage to build and sustain psychological safety in virtual teams?
