Abstract

Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) remains a hot topic and continues to act as one of the causes of prolonged pain and disability. Considering adolescence is a pivotal and stressful period that is accompanied by mental health impacts associated with puberty, one must consider the clear bidirectional relationship between adolescent pain and psychosocial factors. The perspectives of parents and/or caregivers have been shown to directly impact an adolescent’s psychosocial environment and affect pain-related disability through behaviours such as pain catastrophizing. However, there seems to be little literature that highlights the caregiver's involvement in treatment for CMP within this population. This scoping review will summarize the available evidence on how parents/guardians/caregivers of adolescents undergoing treatment for CMP perceive their treatment experience.
