Global Structural and Mechanistic Catalogue of Androgenic Agents: Anabolic Steroids, SARMs, Prohormones, Designer Compounds, and Hybrid AR Modulators
Abstract
The Global Structural and Mechanistic Catalogue of Androgenic Agents is a comprehensive research project that aims to create the first unified scientific framework covering all known androgenic compounds. These include anabolic steroids, non steroidal SARMs, steroidal SARMs, prohormones, designer steroids, abandoned pharmaceutical analogues, veterinary androgenic agents, hybrid AR modulators, and compounds originating from underground laboratory sources. The project integrates structural chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, doping science, medicinal chemistry, and forensic analysis into a single coherent system. The purpose of this work is to address a long standing fragmentation in the literature. Research on androgenic agents is dispersed across endocrinology, pharmacology, toxicology, sports science, medicinal chemistry, and forensic casework, with no existing publication providing a complete structural and mechanistic catalogue. This project resolves that gap by combining historical development, structural taxonomy, mechanistic pathways, detection methods, and regulatory context into one unified reference. The project includes several major components. The structural taxonomy provides detailed classification of steroidal and non steroidal androgenic agents, including their chemical families, modifications, and known or predicted activity at the androgen receptor. The mechanistic integration section examines receptor binding, co regulator recruitment, tissue specific activation, metabolic pathways, and toxicological mechanisms across all classes. Historical timelines document the evolution of pharmaceutical development, doping practices, SARMs research, designer steroid emergence, and underground laboratory innovation. Forensic and anti doping sections summarise detection methods, metabolite profiles, analytical challenges, and emerging threats. The supplementary materials, archived with a Zenodo DOI, include a full compound list, patent extraction tables, LC MS MS spectra references, an underground laboratory compound registry, structural diagrams, detection matrices, mechanistic pathway diagrams, and metadata files. These materials provide a permanent, citable dataset that supports transparency, reproducibility, and future research. Expected outcomes of this project include the creation of a definitive reference for researchers, clinicians, forensic analysts, and regulatory bodies; improved clarity in the classification and understanding of androgenic agents; and a foundation for future work in predictive modelling, analytical detection, and regulatory science. The completed manuscript will serve as a landmark review that consolidates decades of dispersed research into a single, accessible scientific framework.
