Keeping the Faith: From Childhood Homes to Adult Belief
Abstract
This project will examine how childhood family environments shape religious outcomes in adulthood. It will analyze the associations between parenting quality, religious upbringing, and family stability and multiple dimensions of adult religiosity, including affiliation, belief, and practice. The study will emphasize family processes such as parental warmth, consistency, and household stability as key mechanisms linking early life experiences to later religious commitment. By integrating insights from research on family structure, parenting, and religious socialization, this project will clarify why some individuals maintain religious belief into adulthood while others disengage, contributing to broader debates about intergenerational transmission and religious change.
