Geroprotective Agents and Ocular Outcomes: A Scoping Review With Emphasis on GLP-1 RAs and Glaucoma
Abstract
Glucagon‑like peptide‑1 receptor agonists, now widely used for weight management in addition to glycemic control, have drawn increasing ophthalmic interest because emerging data suggest both potential therapeutic benefits—such as reduced glaucoma risk—and unconfirmed adverse associations, including nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. Beyond GLP‑1 agents, several other pharmacologic therapies used for longevity promotion, weight reduction, or metabolic regulation are frequently encountered as concomitant medications in ophthalmic practice. Yet their ocular effects remain inconsistently characterized, with limited systematic evaluation and sparse documentation across the literature. This scoping review identifies these agents and maps their reported ocular outcomes, synthesizing both potential benefits and adverse effects to support clinical awareness and guide future investigation.
