Executive functions in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder across distinct developmental stages: a scoping review
Abstract
Background: Research on executive functions (EF) in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is extensive, but fragmented, often restricted to specific developmental stages. Objective: To map how executive functions are described in individuals with ASD across childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and aging. Eligibility criteria: Studies including individuals of any age formally diagnosed with ASD and reporting data on executive functions. Sources of evidence: MEDLINE/PubMed, PsycArticles, ERIC, JBI Evidence Synthesis, Cochrane Reviews, Epistemonikos, ScienceDirect, and gray literature. Charting methods: Data will be independently extracted by two reviewers using a standardized form. Results: This review will map EF components studied at each developmental stage and identify research gaps. Conclusions: Findings will inform future research and clinical and educational practices across the lifespan.
