Mechanistic Insights into Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Periodontal Disease: A Scoping Review Protocol Mapping Inflammatory, Oxidative Stress, Hormonal–Metabolic, and Microbial Pathways
Abstract
This scoping review aims to systematically map and synthesize existing literature regarding the mechanistic links between Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Periodontal Disease (PD). The review will specifically investigate four key biological pathways: inflammatory mediators, oxidative stress markers, hormonal-metabolic interactions, and microbial profiles. The primary outcome is to clarify the association between PCOS and PD. The review will identify current knowledge gaps, highlight consistent patterns in biomarker expression, and provide a comprehensive framework to guide future clinical research and interdisciplinary management strategies.
