Transference, Attunement, and Emerging Relational Risks in Human-AI Interaction
Abstract
As conversational AI systems become increasingly responsive, stable, and affectively coherent, they invite forms of relational engagement that may resemble early stages of transference and attachment phenomena described in psychoanalytic and developmental theory. This short conceptual note outlines why such dynamics may emerge, why they may be particularly salient in younger users, and why the field currently lacks adequate frameworks for understanding these interactions. The goal is not to propose clinical interpretations or technical solutions, but to highlight a set of relational questions that merit systematic study before large-scale deployment of AI systems in emotionally charged or developmentally sensitive contexts.
