Abstract

Research Purpose The primary purpose of this scoping review is to systematically map the existing literature on financial toxicity in cancer patients and the corresponding management strategies. It aims to explore the breadth and nature of evidence, clarify key concepts, identify and categorize various types of interventions or approaches used to mitigate financial hardship, and pinpoint critical gaps in the current research landscape. This review seeks to provide a comprehensive overview that can inform future research, clinical practice, and health policy development. Anticipated Outcomes Conceptual Clarification and Framework: A synthesized definition and conceptual model of financial toxicity in the context of cancer care, detailing its contributing factors, manifestations (e.g., psychological distress, treatment non-adherence), and consequences. Taxonomy of Management Strategies: A clear categorization of existing management and intervention strategies. This will likely be structured across different levels (e.g., policy/health system, hospital/institutional, community-based, and patient-level strategies). Evidence Map: A visual or descriptive summary of the volume, types (e.g., qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods), and focus of available research, highlighting well-covered areas and under-researched topics. Identification of Research Gaps: Specific recommendations for future primary research or systematic reviews, based on identified inconsistencies, methodological limitations, or unexplored populations/strategies in the current literature. Practical and Policy Implications: A discussion of preliminary findings that could guide the development of supportive care programs, patient navigation services, financial counseling protocols, and evidence-based policy recommendations to alleviate the economic burden on cancer patients and their families.
