Patient Safety in Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Procedures Performed by Non-Physician Professionals: A Scoping Review
Abstract
Introduction Minimally invasive aesthetic procedures have shown exponential growth, being performed not only by physicians but also by other healthcare professionals such as nurses, physiotherapists, biomedical scientists, and aestheticians. This expansion of multiprofessional practice raises important questions about patient safety, professional competencies, and adequate regulation. Objective To map and synthesize the available scientific literature on patient safety in minimally invasive aesthetic procedures performed by non-physician professionals, identifying knowledge gaps, safety protocols, adverse events, and regulatory guidelines. Methods A scoping review will be conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches will be performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus databases and grey literature. Studies published in the last 15 years, in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, addressing procedures such as hyaluronic acid fillers, botulinum toxin, biostimulators, chemical peels, microneedling, and other minimally invasive procedures performed by non-physician professionals will be included. Inclusion Criteria Studies on minimally invasive aesthetic procedures Non-physician professionals (nurses, physiotherapists, biomedical scientists, aestheticians) Focus on patient safety, adverse events, or safety protocols Primary studies, systematic reviews, guidelines, and regulatory documents Expected Results It is expected to identify the main risks associated with procedures, established safety protocols, necessary competencies for each professional category, existing regulatory frameworks, and literature gaps that may guide future research and public policies. Conclusion This review will contribute to establishing evidence-based guidelines for the safe practice of minimally invasive aesthetic procedures by non-physician professionals, promoting patient safety and quality of aesthetic care.
