Abstract

The continuous presence of a birth companion in the delivery room is widely recognized as a key element in promoting a positive childbirth experience. In addition to emotional and physical support, the companion can play an active role in implementing non-pharmacological strategies for pain relief, such as breathing exercises. The unconditional support provided during this significant moment in a woman's life decisively contributes to her comfort and well-being, fostering a safer, more welcoming environment that promotes a positive birth experience. Objective: To map the extent, nature and characteristics of direct and contextual evidence on birth companion support for the use of breathing exercises during labour. Methods: This Scoping Review follows the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Studies in Portuguese, English, and Spanish will be included, involving women in labor and/or companions addressing the use of breathing exercises supported by the companion. The study selection and data extraction processes were conducted by two independent reviewers.
