Abstract

Computational chemistry plays a crucial role in understanding chemical systems by applying mathematical models and computer-based calculation methods to simulate molecular structures, properties, and reactions. Various calculation methods have been developed to balance accuracy and computational cost, ranging from classical approaches to advanced quantum mechanical techniques. These methods include molecular mechanics, semi-empirical methods, ab initio calculations, and density functional theory (DFT). Each approach differs in its theoretical foundation, level of approximation, and applicability to different chemical problems. Molecular mechanics is suitable for large systems due to its low computational demand, while quantum mechanical methods provide higher accuracy for electronic structure analysis. This article discusses the fundamental principles, advantages, and limitations of major calculation methods in computational chemistry, highlighting their importance in fields such as drug discovery, materials science, and molecular modeling.
