Genetic association between periodontitis and Alzheimer's disease: a scoping review
Abstract
Periodontitis is defined as a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the periodontium and is considered one of the most prevalent worldwide. There are numerous associated risk factors, including poor oral hygiene, age, and smoking. Unequivocally, periodontitis has been associated with several systemic diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases, and is therefore a major research topic. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most impactful diseases today. In AD, there is a deterioration of cognitive abilities. Learning capacity, memory, and language are severely affected, and consequently, there is a compromise in the quality of life and autonomy of patients. The relationship between periodontitis and AD has been the subject of research in recent years. Objective: To analyze the most recent literature on the association between periodontitis and Alzheimer's disease, identifying the genetic mechanisms of interrelationship
