Project Aiolos: Hybrid Wind-CAES Retrofit Concept
Abstract
This project proposes a conceptual framework for retrofitting existing wind energy infrastructure with Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) technology. The "Aiolos" system addresses the critical issue of wind curtailment and intermittency by diverting off-peak rotational energy to drive pneumatic compression systems. By storing excess energy as high-pressure atmospheric air (rather than in chemical batteries), the system enables wind farms to provide dispatchable baseload power, significantly increasing grid stability and renewable efficiency without reliance on rare-earth materials.
