Coherent Flow: A Unified Framework for Organised Systems
Abstract
Coherent Flow: A Unified Framework for Organised Systems This project consolidates a set of complementary papers that develop a unified, cross‑domain framework for understanding how coherent organisation emerges, stabilises, declines, and collapses in systems driven far from equilibrium. Across physics, biology, cognition, ecology, artificial intelligence, and simulated universes, coherent structure consistently follows the same developmental sequence: Gradient → Flow → Structure → Information → Behaviour → (Consciousness) → Collapse → Renewal. The framework is built from five integrated components: 1. Coherence Formation Through Energy Flow A physical model describing how coherent patterns arise in driven systems such as Bénard convection, Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities, dendritic crystal growth, and electroconvection. The model introduces a general formation equation linking energy input, dissipation efficiency, and coherence, capturing the threshold at which disordered systems reorganise into stable structures. 2. Coherence Across Scales A cross‑domain analysis showing that physical pattern formation and complex‑system behaviour share the same mathematical architecture. Systems as diverse as ecosystems, civilisations, and technological networks exhibit identical transitions: disordered regimes, thresholds, coherent phases, breakdown, and renewal. 3. Coherent Flow: A Substrate‑Independent Principle A general organising principle proposing that any system with persistent gradients and pathways for transfer will evolve toward configurations that minimise flow cost, maximise coherence, and integrate information to stabilise that coherence. The principle is evaluated across astrophysical systems, atmospheric dynamics, biological evolution, neural integration, artificial intelligence, and artificial universes. 4. Energy‑Driven Coherence Dynamics (ECD) A unified driver–resistance formulation that connects physical coherence formation with the temporal evolution of complex systems. This model provides a general differential structure for coherence growth, stabilisation, stress accumulation, fragmentation, and collapse. 5. The Coherence Cycle A lifecycle model describing the rise, peak, decline, collapse, and renewal of coherent systems. The cycle is formalised through a piecewise differential equation and applied to deep‑time biological transitions, civilisational dynamics, and ecosystem succession. The model generates testable predictions, including early‑warning signals near thresholds and characteristic recovery curves after collapse. Purpose of the Project This project brings these components together into a single, structured research suite. The aim is not to replace existing theories in thermodynamics, information theory, complexity science, or neuroscience, but to unify them by explaining why similar organisational trajectories arise across systems with no shared physical substrate. The framework is: - cross‑domain - falsifiable - mathematically structured - consistent with established science - open to empirical testing and refinement By presenting these works together, the project provides a foundation for interdisciplinary dialogue, comparative modelling, and future experimental validation.
