Abstract

Computational chemistry employs several calculation methods to model molecular systems with varying levels of accuracy and computational cost. Molecular mechanics treats atoms and bonds using classical force fields, making it highly efficient for large biomolecular systems but unable to describe electronic effects. Semiempirical quantum methods incorporate simplified quantum mechanics with empirical parameters, offering a balance between speed and electronic accuracy for medium-sized molecules. Ab initio methods rely solely on fundamental quantum theory, providing high accuracy for small systems at the expense of significant computational resources. Density Functional Theory focuses on electron density rather than wavefunctions, delivering an effective compromise between accuracy and efficiency for studying molecular structures and electronic properties.
