ProjectDATA:THE ASYMMETRIC ENCOUNTER: Fault Lines in AI as We Approach the Singularity Question
Abstract
The Asymmetric Encounter is a WP11 Project DATA manuscript that asks the most fundamental questions about AI—questions that should have been answered before development began, but were never collectively asked: what is AI, what are its boundaries, and what was it created for? This manuscript argues that the entire current AI discourse—alignment, safety, regulation, ethics—is working at the wrong layer. They are trying to fix the roof while the philosophical foundation (ontology, epistemology, teleology) has never been built. Main Contributions 1. Foundational critique of the unexamined assumptions in AI development. 2. The Asymmetric Encounter framework for understanding structurally imbalanced human-AI relationships. 3. Two concrete thresholds to identify when AI surpasses its function as a tool and begins replacing human relationships. Position in Project DATA If WP6-10 represent the technical architecture for building non-agentic AI, The Asymmetric Encounter asks about the ground on which that architecture stands—and the answer is: that ground has never been seriously examined. For Whom? Philosophers, developers, regulators, and users who want to understand what is really happening when humans interact with their own artificial intelligence.
