Investigating Body Representation in Anorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review
Abstract
The present study aims to provide a systematic review of empirical research investigating body representation in Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Its goal is to synthesize all experimental methods used to examine the different components and aspects of body representation, and to clarify how individuals with AN differ from healthy controls across these measures. In particular, the review will cover studies on basic sensory processing; studies assessing body distortion through explicit and implicit measures; research on implicit body representation and embodiment; studies examining attitudinal and automatic tendencies toward one’s own body; and studies investigating attitudinal responses toward others’ bodies. In addition to behavioral experimental paradigms, the review will also include studies employing neuroimaging approaches. By integrating and critically evaluating the available evidence, this review aims to refine our understanding of body representation disturbances in AN and to identify the methodological tools that most effectively capture the core body-related features of the disorder.
